Delhi 2 Dublin

with Special Guests Dream Catcher

Delhi 2 Dublin

A live collaboration in 2006 at CelticFest Vancouver put together this band as a one-off performance piece called Delhi to Dublin. It was so well-received that requests for additional performances led to the official formation of Delhi 2 Dublin. After three albums and international recognition, we are thrilled to be presenting this dynamic band again for the first time since its inception at the Festival 6 years ago.

Delhi 2 Dublin continues to break the mold with the release of its new genre-busting album, Planet Electric, in 2010. It’s as if the band has been sent on a mission to further spread their sound across the planet and out into the galaxy. They describe Planet Electric “as the buzz of the world that they are plugging into some large socket to electrify the people, to charge up their energy”. To capture that dynamism, all of the tracks on the album were road-tested in front of live audiences before being recorded.

Hour Magazine wrote that “Delhi 2 Dublin is the United Nations of rock ‘n’ roll”. The Vancouver, Canada-based band plays an energetic mash-up of Bhangra, Celtic, Dub, Reggae and Electronica with global rhythms and club beats. Tarun Nayar, Sanjay Seran, Andrew Kim and Ravi Binning, along with guest musicians Jaron Freeman-Fox and Sara Fitzpatrick, are diverse in both their backgrounds and musical influences.

The Delhi 2 Dublin crew are road warriors. They have played major festivals in both Canada and the U.S. including Bumbershoot in Seattle, Earthdance in California, High Sierra in California, Stern Grove in San Francisco as well as such diverse events as SXSW in Austin, the Keelung City Ghost Festival in Taiwan and the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver.

A new line-up, a new album and new international touring opportunities all signal that originality and evolution are all part of the Delhi 2 Dublin experience. They have become one of Canada’s most buzzed-about bands and 2012 will only see them enhancing that reputation.

After all, where else are you going to see fiddle players rocking out with a kilt-wearing Korean flanked by two bouncing Bhangra percussionists and a vocalist who looks like he would be at home in a Bollywood music video?

Jim Byrnes

Jim Byrnes

 “...smoldering intensity...deeply soulful...”

British Blues Connection

Born in St. Louis, Missouri, “blues country”, if anyone can sing the blues, it's Jim Byrnes. He is one of Vancouver's most popular musicians, as well as one of Canada's best-known actors (noted for his starring roles in the series "Highlander", "Wise Guy" and his own variety show “The Jim Byrnes Show”). Jim is a singer solidly rooted in the traditions of blues and R&B. This was recognized in 1996 when Jim, noted for his evocative smoky vocals, won a Juno Award for his release "That River", for the Best Blues/Gospel album of the year ... and again in 2007 when his first outing with The Sojourners, "House of Refuge", won the Juno Award for Blues Album of the Year.  His latest release, "Everywhere West ", carries on in that grand tradition, recently garnering Jim his third Juno Award in the 2011 Blues Album of the Year category. Jim continues to tour actively in North America and Europe and to build his film and television resume.

Steve Dawson

Steve Dawson

Over the past decade or so Steve Dawson has become such an indelible fixture on the Canadian musical landscape that it’s tempting to take him for granted. One of the drawbacks of being so talented is that Dawson makes everything he does sound so effortless. The music that continually flows out of him is so natural and unforced that it’s possible to forget all of the toil that went into producing it. Behind the organic, flowing guitar work, the crisp arrangements and the laconic singing voice, resides one of the brightest, hardest working musicians the country has ever produced.

Steve Dawson is an accomplished multi-instrumentalist. Specializing in slide and fingerstyle guitar, pedal steel, lap steel, banjo and other instruments, he is in demand as a performer, session musician and producer. Over the last decade, Steve has performed at major jazz and folk festivals in Canada, the USA and Europe.

In addition to working on his own music, he’s kept very busy producing memorable albums by such luminaries as Jim Byrnes, Kelly Joe Phelps, Jenny Whiteley, Old Man Luedecke, The Sojourners, and The Deep Dark Woods, as well as the award winning Mississippi Sheiks Tribute Project. Add to that his session work and touring commitments and it’s amazing that this 2-time Juno Award winning artist (not to mention 5 other Junos for his production work!) ever finds the time to create any new work under his own name.

Nightshade hit the streets in March, 2011. A new solo album from Steve is always something special. Although it continues in the vein of Steve’s previous solo recordings, it expands upon the language of his guitar work and offers more complex and fully realized songs than ever before. It represents a significant leap forward and is destined to become one of the most admired albums in an already impressive body of work.

Fish & Bird

Fish Bird

Fish & Bird's latest album, Every Whisper is a Shout Across the Void, marks a major step forward for the young band. The project began in Victoria, BC in 2006 as an acoustic duo, comprised of Taylor Ashton (banjo, guitar, vocals) and Adam Iredale-Gray (fiddle), and now Fish & Bird are the five-piece indie-folk powerhouse we know today.

Expanding on themes hinted at on the second album, Every Whisper explores the relationship between reality and perception. Taylor Ashton's lyrics explore the fragility of human interactions, and the fictions we all weave about our own worlds whether we acknowledge them or not.

2011 was a good year for Fish & Bird: In February, the band performed to a sold-out CBC studio audience for a concert that was aired on radio and television nationwide.  They traveled to Memphis, TN to perform an official showcase at the International Folk Alliance conference. Following the album's release in April, 2011, they toured hard all around Canada, from Vancouver Island to PEI to the Yukon, playing festivals, clubs, and house concerts.  The album picked up a Western Canadian Music Award nomination, and in October the band traveled to Whitehorse to play at the awards ceremony and at the associated BreakOut West music festival.  A lot is cooking for 2012.

Roy Forbes

Roy Forbes

Born in Dawson Creek, B.C. and nicknamed Bim as a child, Roy Forbes has been a strong presence on the Canadian music scene since the early 70’s as a performer, songwriter, recording artist, record producer, and broadcaster.  It might be on the CBC or across a festival meadow, but you’ll always recognize the unique, intense guitar playing and the high soulful singing of Roy Forbes. He has absorbed all of his influences and developed into a totally original, dynamic, exciting performer of deeply resonant lyrics.  Roy started making up songs in 1967, after receiving his first guitar.  From the 1975 release of his first album, Kid Full Of Dreams, Roy has been regarded as one of Canada’s finest songwriters. This two-time Juno nominee and multi West Coast Music Award winner has nine solo albums to his credit as well as two CDs with UHF (Ulrich Henderson and Forbes) and a Christmas album with Connie Kaldor. Roy has not only had success singing his own songs – they’ve also been performed and recorded by a myriad of other performers and have been used as 'source music' for movies and television.  He is also a producer of other artists, contributes regularly to CBC Radio One with the occasional but popular Snap Crackle Pop and is now hosting a weekly radio show on CKUA – Roy’s Record Room – heard every Monday evening.  His latest album, Some Tunes For That Mother of Mine, pays tribute to the songs he grew up hearing in his snowy Dawson Creek hometown in northern British Columbia.  After forty years, Roy Forbes remains one of Canada’s favourite and best-loved acoustic artists.

Kalissa Hernandez

Kalissa Hernandez

At just 21 years old, Kalissa Hernandez is already an accomplished performer, competitor, and recording artist. She has already received much recognition for her talent, her hard work, both performing and competing. A four time Top Ten finalist at the Canadian Grand Masters (National Fiddling Competition), Kalissa made musical history when, at 12 years old, she was the youngest person ever to win the title of 'BC Provincial Fiddle Champion', competing against players more than three times her age. Since then, the Chilean-Canadian Hernandez has continued to hone her craft, fusing her Latin sensibility to a variety of fiddle styles including Irish, Old Time Canadian, Texas Swing, Celtic, Métis, and Classical. In 2009 Kalissa recorded not one but two albums. Sisters, an album of fiddle duets, was a collaborative effort with sister Ivonne, while, Later Than Last, Kalissa’s debut solo effort, took her on the road, touring extensively throughout North America and Europe, performing at various Folk Festivals and clubs, fiddling, singing, and step-dancing. In May of 2009, Kalissa joined forces with The Paperboys, the Juno Award winning ensemble. She has since toured with them in Germany, Switzerland and Denmark, as well as playing major clubs in Canada and the United States. In July, The Paperboys headlined the Vancouver Folk Festival, alongside Mavis Staples, Arrested Development and The Proclaimers. In addition to performing, writing and recording, Kalissa is dedicated to preserving the tradition of fiddle music, and is a sought after fiddle instructor for schools, camps, workshops and private lessons. Singer, step-dancer, musician - perhaps where Kalissa shines the most, is in her fiery performances which bring audiences to their feet, and always leaves them wanting for more.

Locarno

Cameron Latimer

Locarno is the Latin project of Juno award winning musician and Paperboys frontman, Tom Landa. The music, like him, is part Mexican but with strong doses of Cuban Son, Folk Music, Pop and Funk. There are threads of Son Jarocho and Salsa but the songs are more edgy and contemporary than that. The music could be compared to Manu Chao, Ozomatli or Rodrigo and Gabriela but although there are similarities it is truly original and a new flavour in the Latin music genre.

For the past few years Tom has been writing and recording the material for his project Locarno. His goal is to create music which is heavily influenced by Mexican music but using the elements and musicians around him in his hometown of Vancouver. A key element to this sound is the partnerships he has created with producer Joby Baker who has worked with several World/Latin artists including Alex Cuba and Miguelito Valdes who lends his trumpet and percussion talents to the project. Miguelito was born and raised in Havana Cuba and has played with Afro Cuban All Stars, Omara Portoundo and The Buena Vista Social Club. Rounding up the group is Sam Esecson on drums and percussion, Kalissa Hernandez on Violin and vocals and Nick La Riviere on trombone.

Locarno’s debut recording, Una Mas Y Ya Nos Vamos (tr. One More and We’re Gone) was released in June 2011. It is receiving a great response already from fans and reviewers are saying the album is “adding exciting new flavours and blends to Latin music.”

Farrell Spence

Farrell Spence

Farrell Spence is a Canadian Roots/Americana singer and songwriter from Vancouver, Canada. In April of 2007 she released her first album, A Town Called Hell. It was received well and garnered positive reviews from various UK, Irish and American music magazines which focus on the Americana/Bluegrass scene and artists within it.

Spence has performed to packed houses in her hometown of Vancouver as well as in Ireland, the UK and Italy. In Vancouver in 2008 she joined an ensemble band with Trish Klein and Frazey Ford of The Be Good Tanyas, Simon Kendall of Doug and The Slugs, Rob Wilson, Mark Beatty, Khari McClelland and John Raham for a series of live gospel shows titled The Sweet Sounds Gospel Show.

In June of 2008 Spence moved to Cork, Ireland to write the songs for a new CD in a new environment. She worked with several Irish musicians from Eoghan Regan and David Murphy, to famed Dublin slide-guitar player, NC Lawlor. While she wrote most of the material for her second CD, Song For The Sea, in Ireland, in the end she decided to work with Italian guitar player and lyricist, Francesco Forni, to complete the project. The two had found a sound and a tone together that was unrivalled in previous shows and recordings. Spence and Forni toured together in 2009 in Italy, Ireland and Northern Ireland and were then invited for an interview and live performance on BBC Radio in May 2009. Song For The Sea was released in North America in October of 2011.

Two of Farrell’s songs were licensed for Showtime’s ‘The Chris Isaak Show’ and she can be heard on regular rotation on CBC Radio in Canada, RTE Radio in Ireland, BBC Radio in the UK, RAI in Italy and a myriad of college and independent radio stations and net-stations broadcasting from the USA, Canada and Europe.

The Matinée

The Matinee

The roots-rock sounds of The Matinée evoke memories of family camping trips, men with guitars around the campfire belting out tunes of broken things & the open road…rising tempos bring the faithful to their feet, clapping & dancing until someone throws an aerosol can on the fire & everything explodes…

Formed in 2007, The Matinée has quickly gained radio play and a reputation for packed-house shows. Their live performance has been described as “dynamic, whimsical and enthusiastic with a rootsy do-it-yourself flavour” – a sharp contrast to their crisp professionalism and unflagging work ethic. With all six members growing up within 5 minutes of each other in rural Vancouver, this group of high school friends has formed a hardworking brotherhood dedicated to crafting fine roots-rock tunes and seeking out audiences wherever they can.

2009 saw the release of their self-titled follow up EP as The Matinée teamed up with award-winning producer Paul Shatto (The Higgins, The Mocking Shadows). Their first single ‘Let Her Go’ was featured on the 2010 Music BC Compilation Album, and the acoustic version of the song landed the band a spot in the top 10 artists for The Shore 104.3FM’s Sounds of Summer Contest. As ‘Let Her Go’ continued to make waves across Canadian radio, their song ‘Friends’ began gaining exposure across America as it was featured on the California based Errorcraft Records’ ‘Glory Road’ Compilation album.  The band was also nominated as the best Roots/Canadiana band at the 2010 BCCMA Industry Awards.

In early 2011 the band picked up where it left off, being selected as the 3rd place winner in this year’s Peak Performance Project. This coincided with another inclusion for the band in The Shore 104.3 FM’s Sounds of Summer contest, this time riding the waves of their new single Sweetwater.

After four years of independent production and promotion under their label Blue Collar Records, The Matinée is currently putting the final touches on their next album, slated for release in 2012. If you like The Band, The Black Crowes, and old Bruce Springsteen, you’ll love these six handsome lads from blue-collar British Columbia. Raise a glass, and raise the curtain…it’s showtime for The Matinée!!

The Paperboys

The Paperboys

Mexican Son Jarocho mixed in with Irish Jigs and Reels and a good dose of Country and Bluegrass. It has healthy servings of Ska, Soca and African Highlife and they’ve been known to throw in a little White Boy Reggae, with strains of Soul, Pop and Funk.

It is the only multi-cultural, multi-ethnic, multi-generational, multi-lingual, multi-instrumental, genre bending, co-ed band you will hear today!!

The Paperboys were formed by Mexican born, Tom Landa in the mid nineties in Vancouver. Tom had a vision of forming a band that fused Folk, Celtic and Bluegrass music with Pop and Rock. What has happened since is 7 albums, countless tours of North America and Europe, TV and Movie appearances, Movie Scores, Industry Accolades, Rave Reviews by Press & Media, and several Music awards including Canada's version of The Grammy's, The JUNO Award. For the past 15 years, The Paperboys have been selling out venues throughout the globe.

The band's latest CD, Callithump, is a perfect marriage of all the different styles The Paperboys play. The infectious hooks of the horns blended with the lyrical sounds of the fiddle and flute make for a melodic delight, while the influence of Latin and African rhythms make the groove on this album truly dance worthy.
