Why not ring in 2014 with a whole lot of fun and a touch of Celtic traditions? We are taking a look at a few historic Irish New Years customs as well as the most festive of local Vancouver happenings!
The Irish can be a superstitious bunch with traditions steeped in symbolism. They like a clean house, but especially on New Years. The Irish believe it symbolizes the importance of starting fresh. On New Year’s night, Irish families gather together to remember those who have passed away the year before by setting a place for them at the dinner table and leaving the door unlatched.
For all of you single ladies and gents – as the story in Ireland goes, hang some mistletoe on your door this New Year’s, and you may end up meeting your new wife or husband in the new year.
One Irish tradition that we can definitely relate to is the gathering of family and friends for a large supper signifying prosperity and plenty of food for the coming year. Although the official Celtic New Year festival, known as Samhain, is celebrated on the 31st of October, if you’re planning to ring in 2014 on December 31st with the rest of us Vancouverites, we’ve got you covered!
